Guest Poet: John Adams
John Adams lives in Auckland. He has a Masters degree in creative writing from Auckland University, and also works as a judge in the Waitakere Court. His poetry collection Briefcase (AUP) won the NZSA Jessie Mackay Award for best first poetry book at the 2012 NZ Post Book Awards.
John writes short stories and poetry. His short story collection “the Elbow Stories” was published in 2013. John reckons the first duty of a writer is to entertain. His poetry is embodied in a variety of forms. His performance will include material from his work-in-progress “Trying Rumpelstilstskin.”
He confesses that he find it hard to define his own poetic preoccupations: “I just work away at language, mostly getting defeated but enjoying the battle.”
John will be assisted by Hugh Clarkson as minstrel on guitar for a couple of numbers.

Stephen Galvin – Stephen’s musical interest as a child led him to pursue rock, then jazz, church music, Music theatre, Classical and contemporary music.is musical interests go beyond music to encompass poetry and the connections between music of many different genres and cultures. He taught guitar in several South Auckland schools and has taught guitar, bass and singing at ABC Studios in the downtown Auckland area to many thousand Aucklanders.
He has also worked a classroom music teacher and now teaches guitar classes in South Auckland two days a week. Stephen is very well qualified for these teaching roles, having gained LTCL, BMus BA MMus (Hons.) and Diploma of Teaching
