Photo for Po-Live bioMichael Steven was born in 1977 at the former Mater Miserecordiae Hospital, here in Auckland. He writes from the margins of society about the marginalised. His writing heroes are Georg Trakl, Robert Lowell, Allen Curnow, Lou Reed, Denis Johnson, Cormac McCarthy, and Raymond Carver. His writing appears regularly in journals such as Landfall, Deep South, Poetry NZ, brief, Otoliths.

He is the author of three collections of poetry; most recently Daybook Fragments (Kilmog Press, Dunedin, 2010) Currently, he is interested in transformation, altruism, and the late works of Henri Matisse.michael fragment
