9th May 2017 @ Poetrylive

8PM at the Thirsty Dog, 469 K’rd

Guest Poet: Ken Arkind

Ken Arkind is an American National Poetry Slam Champion, Tedx Speaker, Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam Champion and published author who has performed his work all over the world at hundreds of universities and literary festivals. He is the founding director of Denver Minor Disturbance, The Denver Youth Poet Laureate Program and a co-founder of the Jafa Poetry Slam. He has shared stages with Philip Levine, Yusef Komunyaka, Amy Goodman and Gil Scott Heron just to name a few. Ken is the author of Denver (Fast Geek Press, 2013), Coyotes (Penmanship, 2014) and has recently completed his BCA in Creative Writing from MIT’s faculty of Creative Arts in Otara. He works as a Poet/Youth Mentor for Action Education.

Guest Musician: Dubtext

Dubtext are now a three-piece, with maestro multi-percussionist Rob Mayo joining us on drums and assorted strange objects that ring, clank and knock. This adds considerable live impact to our show and a wider range of interesting sounds. Rob is a founding member of the world group Many Hands who have toured SE Asia and Japan and appeared at WOMAD a few years ago.

But the Dubtext electronic groove core is still present. And we will be working with the first set of open mic poets, providing an ambient soundtrack and vocal fx for those that want it.

Open Mic: all welcome to read/perform
