8th May 2018 @ Poetrylive

8PM at the Thirsty Dog, 469 K’rd

Guest Poet: Rachael Naomi

Rachael says “I have been writing poetry since 2006, my previous creative outlets singing, playing the guitar and working on stories for young children. My passion for poetry, paint and a love of the artistic nature of letters, words and symbols of language, has led me to create visual poetry — adding colour and texture to my poetry through the medium of indian ink, paint and collage. I also love to chalk my poems responding to the impermanent and have a deep desire to keep the art of writing alive. Poetry Live! has been an integral part of my life since August 2006 — I love the vibe, the inclusiveness and the creative energy and can’t imagine life
without it! On this night, I look forward to taking my Poetry Live! MC pōtae, giving it to Kate to wear from this night onwards, and to place on my head the Poet pōtae once more.

Guest Musician: Freaky Meat

Freaky Meat are a dynamic and innovative act who have successfully combined elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock and Metal with beat-speak styles inspired by Jack Kerouac, C. R. Avery, Gill Scot Heron, William S Burroughs, Mr Bungle, Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.
Premiere Auckland beat-poet Shane Hollands is joined by accomplished musicians John McNab (guitar), Rod Redgrave (percussion), and Julian Pettitt (bass) who create atmospheric soundscapes which are complemented by Hollands’ mesmerizing narratives of life, travels, experiences and people.
Freaky Meat are seasoned performers in Auckland’s live scene, joining forces with the likes of Andrew Fagan and The People, Black Sand Diva and Dave Alley.
in 2018 look out for the freaks heading into the studio to produce ‘Fugu’, tracks from the other side of the wordcore universe, a possibly disturbing dystopian dreamscape.
Reviews for their album ‘Delicatessen’ : “[Delicatessen] presents a collection of poems that range from finely nuanced wordcraft to beat-style stream-of-consciousness narratives…covering a diverse range of styles; jazz, funk, rock and even metal all knitted together by the high quality of its musical ideas and musicianship. Standout tracks include ‘The Lament of Paris’…’Stolen Kisses’, and ‘My Poetry Is An Alcoholic Pitbull’ – a clever piece of writing” – John Brinkman, Groove Guide
‘Poetry in musical motion…Highlights include Zombie Xmas Hams and My Poetry Is An Alcoholic Pit Bull In A Bad Mood’ – Ania Glowacz, NZ Musician Magazine
‘HLAH + Sam Hunt’ – Graham Reid, Elsewhere
